I tried shooting in RAW(NEF) in my case. No luck. (unknown file type...blah,blah,blah) I use Picasa. I was told by a fellow camera buddy that I could. The next time I opened Picasa, I did some snooping around. On the TOOLS, I got a drop down menu, and clicked on OPTIONS. I saw a tab for file types, and lots of different file types were there. I put a check in the box next to RAW. Guess you know the rest of the story! Easy as falling off of a log.

Hi, I am new to photography. While I get the concept of shotting RAW, I do not know how to set my camera (Canon DSO 20) to RAW. Please advise. Thx, M

Yup, started taking pictures in RAW all the way after buying my first DSLR, shooting in RAW was one of the main reasons I bought a DSLR, I hated how my jpegs looked like after processing them in photoshop, although it was convenient, but it just limits your creativity.

Making the switch to shooting in RAW was one of th best decisions about photography that I've ever made. You couldn't pay me to go back!

Thanks Scott. You're dead on about how us photo nuts go crazy perfectionist about exposure, color, everything. The people who actually view our photos though (who aren't other photo nuts) don't notice or could care less. I've often found that my biggest screwups become some of the favorites of clients. That shot that I consider not showing a client because it's completely blown out becomes the 16x20. Who knew?

Spica, I'm a bit disappointed that it took three days for someone to post a comment lashing me for that comment! I knew someone would get me for that one :-) . Thanks for the heads up on UFRaw, I've never heard of it.

What do you mean "Apologies to you Nikon folks out there." What about Pentax guys ? ;op

Anyway, just wanted to tell about UFRaw : it's free, does a good job for me and can work either as a Gimp plugin or as a stand-alone app.
