Photographer To Watch: Joey Lawrence
“It can be very confusing and misleading when I tell people I shoot people for a living. I’m not really the violent type.”
I come across the work of lots of photographers every day, and I see a lot of great photographs. But it’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything like the work of Joey Lawrence. His style is without a doubt unique and all his own.
In just three short years and without any formal photography education, Joey has gone from non-shooter to flying all over the world on paid shoots to do promotional materials for numerous bands and musicians. I only wish I could do the kinds of things Joey does with a camera. His first pictures were taken with a simple one mega pixel point and shoot camera. While he shoots with a Canon 5D today, he still shows those images off in his galleries, showing that the photographer is more important than the camera.
And here’s the kicker, Joey is only 17 years old. When I was 17 I was mowing lawns for date money. Joey is off buying 5D’s with the scratch he makes. I didn’t have an agent for my lawn mowing business, but he does.
Joey has a vast collection of photographs in his galleries. A whole section is dedicated to the homeless subculture in his hometown of Toronto, Canada. Other sections include private shoots, experimental photographs, and photojournalistic shots from a trip to India. In his commercial section, Joey shows work done for bands such as Silverstein, These Silhouettes, Protest the Hero, As Cities Burn, Benjamin Bates, and Yellowcard.
I think it’s safe to say that Joey has a very bright future in this business. This is an easy statement to make of course, as he’s already making that prediction a reality. Remember his name, as I’m sure you’re going to start seeing it more and more in the coming years.

UPDATE: Joey just turned me on to this short behind the scenes video of the first shot in this article. I had to laugh a bit watching all the band members screaming in the video. Thanks for the video Joey.

Joey is not only an amazing talent but a very down-to-earth guy. I’ve never seen a bit of arrogance or condescension in his dealings with others. He seems to be truly amazed at his good fortune, shrugging off suggestions that he’s made his own luck. He lives life to the fullest and is willing to step into the unknown, such as approaching the Gypsy king of Moldova after being warned that that would be dangerous.
He treats his subjects with respect, listens to them, works with them to bring out the best.
And he’s just a damned fun kid to be around!
