Ooooops!

Every once in a while I want to pull up an image from the Sublime Light photo pool (if you’re not a member, you should be, click the link to join) to the main site here to show off the work of some of our readers.
The idea is to give some pats on the back for work well done, as well as provide a little inspiration to all of the other readers, especially those who are thinking to themselves, “I don’t have what it takes to shoot like a pro”. If you’re one of those people, I have news for you: you do have what it takes to shoot like a pro. Just keep up with the site and I’ll hold your hand the whole way.
With a little lighting know how (looks like just two lights were used here, one high and one low), creativity in the pose, and of course a beautiful model, Mr. Pixel from Frankfurt, Germany makes this shot really work.
If you’re a beginner and you’re wondering how you too can take beautiful shots like this, be sure to tune in to the Portrait Lighting For Beginners series. This regular series has been under way for a couple weeks now, and will teach you everything you need to know to shoot portraits like a pro.

Hey Tim,
glad to see my work being posted as an example in your blog
My Name is Dreger as the “D” in VD-Pixel stands for
The “pixel” just should differ from the other “xy-photography.xyz”-domains
The lighting in that shot was a bit easier - not two lights, just one really light was used from the top, a Canon Speedlight 430EX into a simple silver reflex umbrella with a diameter of 90cm.
The light from the bottom comes from a silver reflector with 50cm diameter, reflecting the strobe light once again to the model’s face from below to avoid dark shadows.
Nothing really special about technique in that shot, more credit goes to my beautiful model Christine and my really great Anja for doing the hair+makeup thing very well.
Keep up your great work, Tim, I added your blog already some days ago to my rss-ticker
Cheers, Viktor

Viktor,
Glad you like the blog so far. It’s still just a baby as blogs go, but hopefully with a little love, it will turn into a real blog someday!
To anyone else reading this, Viktor’s comment is proof positive that you can get amazing portraits with just a single light. Heck, you could technically do it with a table lamp if you were a starving student.
Keep shooting!
Tim

I was actually going to jump in and point out that it was a reflector on the bottom, but I’m too late!
