boppy.jpgPhotographing newborn babies presents a variety of challenges, starting with the fact that they have no control over any of their body functions. They are completely helpless and it’s up to you, the photographer, to figure out a creative way to position them for the photo.

That’s where this wonderful pillow comes in. It’s called a Boppy, and it’s a C shaped pillow made for breastfeeding mothers. They wrap it around their waist, and the baby can lay sideways on the pillow and be in the perfect position for feeding.

These are great for positioning babies. You simply place the Boppy under your background, and cradle the baby in the pillow. Now they’re positioned perfectly. Just remember to put something waterproof like a garbage bag over the pillow if you plan to take any shots diaper free.

This shot of my son was taken when he was four weeks old. The Boppy was worth it’s weight in gold for getting him positioned.

quin-portrait-62.jpgYou can get a Boppy at Amazon for $24.99 (at the time of this post). Target and Babies ‘R’ Us also sell them.

Got another great tip for photographing babies? Post a comment and tell everyone about it!
